Assessment of fibrosis and vascularization of bone marrow stroma of chronic myeloid Leukemia patients treated with imatinib mesylate and their relationship with the cytogenetic response BJPS
Jesus,Caroline Regina de; I-Ching,Lee; Neiva,Teresinha de Jesus Carvalho; Vituri,Cidônia de Lourdes.
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is a myeloproliferative disease characterized by the presence of the Philadelphia chromosome (translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22), resulting in the formation of the hybrid BCR-ABL protein. Currently, the treatment of CML patients is performed with imatinib mesylate (IM), which promotes the elimination of leukemic cells by inhibiting the kinase activity of BCR-ABL. This study evaluated the effectiveness of IM by monitoring 22 CML patients in a chronic phase treated at the CEPON/SC with IM for a minimum follow-up period of two years. Cytogenetic Response (CR) and bone marrow biopsies (BMB) were evaluated before and after IM treatment. BMB were evaluated by detection of reticulin degree and vascularization. The results...

Fernandez,S.; Feliciano,M.A.R.; Crivellenti,S.B.; Crivellenti,L.Z.; Simões,A.P.R.; Maronezi,M.C.; Uscategui,R.R.; Capela,C.R.; Gilor,C.; Santana,A.E.; Vicente,W.R.R..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to determine the vascular indices of adrenal blood flow in healthy dogs (systolic velocity - SV; diastolic velocity - DV; resistance index - RI). Eighteen dogs (thirty six adrenal) were studied. Physical examination, biochemical profile and dexamethasone suppression test were performed to determine general health status. Echotexture, size, contours and margins, and overall shape of the adrenal gland (right and left) were assessed via ultrasound. By spectral Doppler of the phrenic-abdominal artery, the SV, DV, and RI were acquired. Animals did not show alterations in clinical and laboratory examination and suppression of cortisol. Normal homogeneous and echotexture, regular contours and margins and normal shape and size...

Can the fractal dimension be applied for the early diagnosis of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy? BJMBR
Kunicki,A.C.B.; Oliveira,A.J.; Mendonça,M.B.M.; Barbosa,C.T.F.; Nogueira,R.A..
The fractal dimension has been employed as a useful parameter in the diagnosis of retinal disease. Avakian et al. (Curr Eye Res 2002; 24: 274-280), comparing the vascular pattern of normal patients with mild to moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), found a significant difference between them only in the macular region. This significant difference in the box-counting fractal dimension of the macular region between normal and mild NPDR patients has been proposed as a method of precocious diagnosis of NPDR. The aim of the present study was to determine if fractal dimensions can really be used as a parameter for the early diagnosis of NPDR. Box-counting and information fractal dimensions were used to parameterize the vascular pattern of the...

Effects of topical 2% cyclosporine A on the corneas of dogs subjected to lamellar keratoplasty with a graft of equine pericardium preserved in glycerin: clinical and morphological evaluation Ciência Rural
Teixeira,Roseli Borges; Barros,Paulo Sergio de Moraes; Martins,Maria Cristina.
The effects of topical 2% cyclosporine A on the cornea of dogs subjected to experimental lamellar keratoplasty with an equine pericardial graft were evaluated. Ten dogs were grouped to be evaluated 3, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days after surgery. Animals received bilateral grafts followed by the application of a 2% cyclosporine A ointment on the left eye (treated eye) and the ointment base on the right eye (control eye) twice a day. The ophthalmic evaluation showed profound bilateral blepharospasm, photophobia and a mucous secretion until the 7th day after surgery; corneal vascularization starting in the limbus was observed as early as the 3rd day in both eyes; opacification and vascularization were more intense in the treated cornea on days 15 and 30 after...

Stocco,A.V.; Sousa,C.A. Santos; Gomes,M.S; Souza Júnior,P.; Figueiredo,M. Abidu.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to characterize the renal morphology and anatomical variations of the renal pedicle in domestic shorthaired cats. Dissections were performed in 40 adult cats, obtained from the necropsy unit without macroscopic renal pathology. Kidney dimensions (length, width, and thickness) and the length and origin of the renal arteries and main branches were measured. The length, width and thickness of the right kidney (cm) were 3.83±0.46, 2.42±0.22, and 2.22±0.33 in males, and 3.61±0.53, 2.28±0.38, and 2.13±0.40 in females, respectively. In the left kidney, these measures were 3.82±0.32, 2.48±0.31, and 2.37±0.32 in males, and 3.48±0.47, 2.39±0.26, and 2.15±0.34 in females, respectively. The left kidneys of males were significantly...

Morphological aspects of the spermatic cord of mice (Mus musculus) Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Gonçalves,Andréia Maria Martarello; Borelli,Vicente.
A histological study of the morphological aspects of 33 spermatic cord pairs of adult mice (Mus musculus) showed that its their components were ensheated by a thin mesothelium capsule in 3 pairs. Under this capsule, completely surrounding the cord, there was a dense layer of adipose tissue. Its components were surrounded by loose connective tissue with a predominance of collagen fibers among reticular and elastic fibers. The testicular artery varied in diameter and was involved by the testicular veins, consisting of an inner layer formed by endothelium and an inner limiting elastic membrane, a middle layer formed by a thick smooth muscle layer supported by a network of reticular fibers, and an outer layer consisting of dense connective tissue close to the...

Morphology, ontogeny and structure of the stipular nectaries in Caamembeca spectabilis (Polygalaceae) Acta Amazonica
FILGUEIRA,Joana Patrícia Pantoja Serrão; KIKUCHI,Tatiani Yuriko Souza; COELHO-FERREIRA,Márlia Regina.
ABSTRACT Nodal glands are found in one third of the Polygalaceae genera and have valuable taxonomic, ecological and evolutionary significance. In Brazil, they occur in five of the eleven genera already registered. However, there is still a controversy regarding the origin of these structures. The objective of this study was to characterize the morphology and the origin of nodal glands inCaamembeca spectabilis, in order to increase the structural and functional knowledge of these glands in the genera. Samples of nodal regions were collected, fixed and processed according to the methods of light microscopy and electron scanning. Ants were observed and identified along the stem axis. The glucose in exudate allows us to classify these glands as extrafloral...

Neurovascular Pedicles of the Tibialis Anterior Muscle in Children International Journal of Morphology
Jesús,R. C; Lopes,M. C. H; Ruiz,C. R; Wafae,G. C; Wafae,N.
The importance of the tibialis anterior muscle in infantile orthopedic transposition surgeries, as in myelomemngoceles, it bases this research about the neurovascular pedicles of the tibialis anterior muscle. The study was conducted on 34 legs of human cadavers that were one year old or younger at the time of death. It was observed that the tibialis anterior muscle most frequently presented from 7 to 10 arterial branches (52.4%). In 97.1% of cases these branches were derived from the anterior tibial artery. In one case the anterior tibial artery was missing and the muscle was supplied by the fibular artery. Thirty-nine and seven tenths percent of arterial branches entered the superior third of the muscle; the middle third received 40.1% of the branches and...

Nutrient Foramina in the Upper and Lower Limb Long Bones: Morphometric Study in Bones of Southern Brazilian Adults International Journal of Morphology
Pereira,G. A. M; Lopes,P. T. C; Santos,A. M. P. V; Silveira,F. H. S.
The major blood supply to long bones occurs through the nutrient arteries, which enter through the nutrient foramina. This supply is essential during the growing period, during the early phases of ossification, and in procedures such as bone grafts, tumor resections, traumas, congenital pseudoarthrosis, and in transplant techniques in orthopedics. The present study analyzed the location and the number of nutrient foramina in the diaphysis of 885 long bones of the upper and lower limbs of adults: 174 humeri, 157 radii, 146 ulnae, 152 femora, 142 tibiae and 114 fibulae. The location of the nutrient foramina is predominant on the anterior aspect of the upper limb long bones, and on the posterior aspect of the lower limb long bones. The majority of the bones...

Variations in human renal arteries - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i2.11178 Biological Sciences
Soares, Tania Regina Santos; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Ferraz, Juliana Soares; Faculdade Ingá; Dartibale, Camila Buziquia; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Oliveira, Inandiara Rafaella Marco; Faculdade Ingá.
Kidneys are especially irrigated by a pair of arteries originated from the aorta artery. The presence of additional renal arteries is the most frequent variation in this vascularization, an aspect important to be known in renal surgeries and radiological procedures (SAMPAIO; PASSOS, 1992). This study aimed to observe the prevalence of numeric variation and the origin of the additional renal artery. For this purpose, 24 cadavers and 26 blocks were used; each block contained the kidneys and their respective arteries and veins, the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava, taken from adults of different ethnicity and genders, from the Department of Morphological Science, State University of Maringá (DCM/UEM) and Laboratory of Anatomy, Ingá Faculty (UNINGÁ)....
